A neighborhood shaped by its neighbors
Our History
The story of Rio Valley begins with the Rio Grande, a wandering river that shaped the valley through centuries of flooding and changing course between the foothills of the Franklin Mountains and the western escarpments ,
The completion of Elephant Butte Dam in 1916 helped regulate the river's flow, making agriculture more dependable. The valley grew vegetables, wheat, and cotton. From the 1930s on, irrigated farming had become an established part of the valley's landscape and this corner of Westside Road and Borderland Road.
In 2004, Rio Valley LLC purchased the property with a vision of creating something different—a neighborhood designed around people, not just houses.
Our Collective Vision
Our vision draws inspiration from the centuries-old acequia communities of the Southwest, where neighbors shared responsibility for managing irrigation water. Through cooperation and shared work, they maintained not only their irrigation systems but also the bonds of community.
We're adapting that tradition to Rio Valley through four irrigation districts and 26 Steward Zones, bringing neighbors together around a shared purpose: creating an abundance of shade.
